Cape Coral Hospital is one of six hospitals within Lee Health, the largest public health system in Florida that receives no direct tax support. Cape Coral Hospital’s 291 beds contribute to Lee Health’s 1,426 beds and more than 1 million patient contacts each year. The facility, opened in 1977 before becoming part of Lee Health in 1996, has more than 1,200 employees and more than 1,000 volunteers. With more than13,000 employees, Lee Health is the largest employer inSouthwest Florida. It’s four acute care hospitals, including Cape Coral, and two specialty hospitals, including Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, trace their history back more than 100 years to the establishment of Lee County Hospital in 1916.Community leaders donated $300 that year to build a two-story, four-room, 10-bed wooden building that established community health care in Southwest Florida.
