Monday night City Council approved the acceptance of a 14-passenger pre-owned bus that was donated by a non-profit organization, Guardian Angels for Special Populations, to the City’s Special Populations Program. The donated vehicle, which is valued at $29,200 will replace an aging vehicle and will enable the City to maintain services provided by the Special Populations Program.

The Guardian Angels for Special Populations is a volunteer, non-profit organization that provides support to the programs at the Freida B. Smith Special Populations Center in Cape Coral.  Since April 1996 this organization has raised funds through community-wide fundraising and grants. The mission for Special Populations is to promote independence through exposure, education, experience and encouragement in a safe, caring environment. Programs include life skills development and adult day training in addition to after school, evening and special events providing an array of activities and options.

Annual fundraising events include the Rock ‘n Roll Dance, Special Populations Golf Classic, Dinner Show, Snowman Shuffle Walk, as well as the upcoming 11th Annual Special Populations Fashion Show and Auction, set for April 6.  The Fashion Show and Auction will feature Special Populations fashion models, photo booth, silent auction, pick-a-prize, live auction, 50/50, grab bags, wine pull, lotto board, grand prize square board, door prizes, gourmet lunch, cash bar and other surprises.
