City Manager's Biography
John Szerlag has been the Cape Coral city manager since May 29, 2012. He served as city manager of Troy, Michigan from April 2009 until being hired by Cape Coral City Council. He also served as Troy’s city manager from 1999 to 2006. Prior to that appointment, he was Troy’s assistant city manager/services for 10 years. Under his direction, the city was one of few cities to maintain a AAA bond rating and has become the first large community in Michigan to adopt a rolling three-year budget. He also was executive director of Troy’s Downtown Development Authority.
John's additional senior management experience includes being city manager of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida; city manager of Howell, Michigan; and assistant to the city manager of Riverview, Michigan.
John holds a Master of Arts degree with a major area of study in urban affairs from the University of Detroit, and a Bachelor of Science degree in administration with a major emphasis in public administration from Ferris State College (University). He is a member of the International City Management Association.
Prior professional affiliations have included the Professional Development Committee for his state association (both as a member from 1993 and committee chair in 1997), the Michigan Local Governmental Managers Association where he served on the Board of Directors and the Policy Committee, the Oakland County Transportation Authority Board and the Board of Directors for the Michigan Municipal League.
John and his wife Debbie have two children, Stacie and Jonathon, and one grandson, Clint.
