Permitting

The City's Department of Community Development (DCD) handles construction permitting. The Department has three divisions:
  • Planning Division
  • Building Division
  • Permitting Services

Planning Division is responsible for planning and zoning. Building Division is responsible for building permits. Commercial Customer Service is responsible for commercial projects.

If your new commercial project involves any improvements or changes to your property, a Permitting Services team has been created to work with commercial applicants to assist them with their project. The team may be contacted at (239) 573-3052 for assistance at any time during the development of a commercial project.

The speed and efficiency of the construction permitting process can greatly help or hinder a community to expand and diversify its tax base. And, as we all know, increasing the tax base is the primary means for a city to advance itself economically.

The Building Division strives to provide the following level of service to the construction industry for building permits.

Due to the volume of residential new construction permits, the target time for approval or return for correction can vary. Commercial permit applications are more complex, so the turnaround time will vary based on the size of the project. Efforts are being made to screen commercial remodeling permits for correct submittal packages to expedite these permits.

In comparison to other communities, Cape Coral issues an average of 550 to 620 new single family home permits per month. Cape Coral continues to distance itself from the pack in terms of permit processing and its quality of service.
