Americans on the Move Choose College Towns

Forbes magazine studied the percentage of residents who moved into the 100 most populous Metropolitan Statistical Areas in 2008, and Cape Coral made the list (rank 7 in the US). Cities that attracted the most new residents tended to be college towns.

“You have an educated population, and you have a large youthful population,” says Alexander von Hoffman, senior fellow at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. “These places retain people after they’ve graduated, and attract like-minded people.” Source: Source: Forbes, Francesca Levy (10/01/2009)

Younger Resident Trend

Growth in the Southwest Florida workforce has been attributed to the rapid growth in population over the past thirty years, with Lee County as the largest county experiencing some of the highest growth. More recently, the number of younger families and individuals coming to the area looking for the Florida lifestyle has continued to increase.

More than 63 percent of the population is between the ages of 15-64 and residents under 25 outnumber residents over 65. Cape Coral’s 18 to 24-year old population, those available to enter the workforce, is projected to grow twice as fast as the Florida workforce average and many times faster than the U.S. population in general. The rapid population growth and available underemployed labor force provide businesses with new employment candidates every day. Educational Attainment Demographics

Several private and state colleges and universities supply Cape Coral with graduates in all fields. Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is offering high-tech and bio-science degrees, and workforce training programs help employers to fine-tune employees' skills.

The 2000 Census reported that 85% of the workforce had attained a high school diploma or greater. Recent workforce statistics and studies indicate an influx of workers with greater educational attainment. Based on 2010 ESRI data, 30.2% of the total population age 25+ has achieved a college degree.

The shift in education attainment from primarily high school to more college level has stimulated a higher demand for more local white collar/knowledge-based jobs.
