On November 9, 2010, the Cape Coral Economic Development Office hosted the first public forum to offer information and invite participation regarding business and investment opportunities in what’s being called the Veterans Investment Zone (VIZ), surrounding the new Cape Coral VA Healthcare Center.

The EDO invited all stakeholders interested in the economic development of this area: developers, realtors, property owners in the VIZ, business owners, community organizations, veterans, local veterans’ organizations, and the general public to The Resort at Marina Village.

Cape Coral Offers Business Opportunities For Veterans

A Powerful Anchor for Economic Development


The new VA Healthcare Center will be the nucleus of the Cape Coral VIZ, the Veterans Investment Zone – a corridor of economic development in Cape Coral that also includes Diplomat Commerce Park, Patriot Plaza, Hope Hospice and the new Army Reserve Center that is expected to open next year. "The VA Healthcare Center will draw development to the northern part of our city, opening the door to building a campus of complementary businesses and services in the area” said EDO director Dana Brunett. 

The 200,000 square feet Lee County VA Healthcare Center is a multidisciplinary specialty care and outpatient clinic and comprehensive healthcare center designed to accommodate the changing needs of veterans in the region.  The state-of-the-art primary and specialty care center is offering mental health, diagnostic radiology, and laboratory services.  The new Lee County Healthcare Center is giving the VA a greater capacity to provide healthcare to a population of over 202,000 veterans in Southwest Florida.

Services that will be expanded at the new Lee County VA Healthcare Center include: primary care, mental health, audiology, cardiology, compensation and pension exams, Coumadin clinic, dermatology, eye care, gastroenterology and endoscopic procedures, home and community care, x-ray, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, neurology, nuclear imaging, nutrition counseling, orthopedics, pharmacy consultation and medication pick up, podiatry, prosthetics, rheumatology, tobacco cessation, Telehealth, telephone call center, social work, spinal cord injury, urology, dental, women’s care, and phlebotomy. Staff is also offering health care enrollment assistance and benefits information.

Special features of the new Lee County VA Healthcare Center include:

  •  Energy efficient building management equipment
  • Enhanced communication like video conferencing and Telehealth
  • Coffee bistro for patients, family and staff

SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development

To ensure that veterans, service disabled veterans and Reserve and National Guard member entrepreneurs receive special consideration in all its entrepreneurial programs and resources, the SBA has established an Office of Veterans Business Development (OVBD). OVBD develops and distributes informational materials for entrepreneurship such as the Veterans Business Resource Guide, VETGazette, and Getting Veterans Back to Work.

SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development is responsible for liaison with the Veterans business community; for policy analysis and reporting; for acting as an Ombudsman for Veterans in Small Business Administration programs, for providing business training, counseling and assistance, and for overseeing the Federal procurement programs for Veteran and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned small businesses.

Florida Veterans Business Outreach Center

Veterans Business Outreach Center

The Florida Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) provides online and face to face entrepreneurial development services for veterans and reservists such as business training, counseling and mentoring, pre-business plan workshops, feasibility analysis, and referrals to additional small business resources. OVBO also partners with the Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for Veterans With Disabilities at Florida State University to prepare service-disabled veterans for business ownership. SBDCs and SCORE also provide targeted management assistance to veterans who are current or prospective small business owners.
