While the walking trails at Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve are open 365 days a year; the Kayak Shack Outpost is open seasonally, weekends only from November thru May. During regular operating hours, the Kayak Shack Outpost offers single and tandem kayak rentals.

The kayak trail at this preserve is not really for beginner's becasue it is narrow in some areas and there is a portage where you will have to get in and out of your boat on your own. In addition to the protage, there are narrow mangrove tunnels, many twists and turns, and there could be shallow water in the tunnels or choppy water if you venture out into the river to get to the cove. The paddling trail between the kayak shack and the portage is narrow and at low tide there may be obstacles in the water that you must paddle around and at high tide you may have to duck under some branches. Hurricane Irma did major damage to that part of the kayak trail, it was completely blocked in many areas. However, the trees were mostly exotics (Brazilian peppers) and were scheduled to be removed anyways, just not all at once. Thanks to Irma, they are all gone! That left part of the trail wide open, there are planting plans in the works.

Four hours is the recommended rental choice because the best part of the park is on the east side of the portage. After the portage, there are no homes, no roads, just you and mother nature :)
