Cornell-Story Unsolved Murders -- 20th Anniversary

Robin Cornell               Lisa Story

It was May 9, 1990 and it seemed like just another quiet night in a small condominium community in Cape Coral, Fla. Around 10:30 p.m., Jan Cornell, a single mother, was tucking her 11-year-old daughter Robin into bed for the night. Jan told Robin that she was going to her boyfriend's house to watch some late night TV, so she gave the girl a kiss and headed for the door.   Her new roommate, Lisa Story, would be at home to keep an eye on Robin.

Shortly after 4 a.m. on May 10, Jan returned home and walked into a mother's worst nightmare -- her daughter, Robin, and her roommate, Lisa, had both been murdered and sexually assaulted.

Cape Police continue to work this case.  The Cornell-Story murder case is one of the top unsolved homicides in the state of Florida.  Police are asking for the public's help to find this killer and bring justice to Jan Cornell and the family of Lisa Story.

The murders have been featured on "America's Most Wanted" three times.  Click here to watch the 2006 edition of the show.  WARNING:  This clip contains the haunting 911 call made that night by Jan Cornell after she discovered her daughter's lifeless body.

CapeTV also taped a program with Jan and the two detectives currently working on this murder case.  Click here to watch the 30-minute program.

Welcome to the Cape Coral Police Departments web site.  Cape Coral is a coastal community located in southwest Florida and is the largest city between Tampa and Miami. Cape Coral has a growing population of more than 165,000 people and a land area of almost 120 square miles. Cape Coral is also known for its 400-plus miles of canals and access to the Gulf of Mexico.

On this site you will find information about our agency as well as news releases, public safety announcements, and links to off-site areas to include Florida Statutes and City ordinances, and Amber Alert information.

It’s an exciting time to live and work in Cape Coral. Violent crime remains low, and to keep it that way, we will focus on being proactive in the upcoming year and beyond.  Already we have hired and trained dozens of new police officers, who will be of great value on our streets, keeping the community safe. Within the concept of community-oriented policing, the Cape Coral Police Department will continue to strive for a strong partnership with our city leaders and citizens. Our department has a commitment to pursuing excellence in everything we do, striving to be the premier law enforcement agency in Florida. In doing so, our city will attain the highest level of safety possible.

The core purpose of the Cape Coral Police Department is declared by its mission statement, which is to ensure the safety and well being of our community through a partnership with our citizens. Although we can take great pride and pleasure in knowing that our efforts in the past have been successful, we must look at the current and future issues we are faced with and take the necessary steps to keep Cape Coral a safe community.

Crime, itself, is not the only quality of life issue the department is focusing on. Over the next year, the Cape Coral Police Department will focus on keeping the roadways safe. Traffic issues deserve a great deal of attention in our expanding city. Our goal in traffic services is to dedicate our activities to an outcome—in this case, it's important to cut down on crashes, injuries and deaths.  Our approach to this worthy endeavor is to police intelligently and with a meaningful purpose by identifying the problem areas and targeting those areas to achieve the desired outcome.
