Program & Classes

Free Nature Seminar

 

The first Thursday of every month, from 1pm-2pm join the park staff for a free lecture of nature related subjects. This is a perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the nature of Cape Coral and Southwest Florida. Subjects will include: Wildlife of Cape Coral, Burrowing owls, Snake Identification, Nile Monitors, Living with Wildlife, Birds of Cape Coral, Mammals of Cape Coral, Reptiles of Cape Coral and Native Plants in Landscaping. Free Guided Walk of Rotary

NEW - Meet at 8:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of each month for a guided walk of Rotary Park and learn about the fauna and flora found in the park.

§           Monday Power Yoga

A dynamic & vigorous style which synchronizes breath & movement; endures longer holds on the poses; cleanses & focuses the mind. Steady breathing builds heat in the body creating flexibility and a higher level of vitality.

 

§           Thursday Yoga & Pilates

A balanced combination of strength, flexibility, core stabilization, mental training and overall body conditioning. Half Pilates & half Yoga.

 

 

KARATE FOR ADULTS (18 yrs & up)

This self-defense form trains the physical motor skills, teaches the philosophy and maintains the spirit of Bushido (the old Asian martial arts). No special skills are required and it can be taken until an advanced age.

ART OF THE SAMURAI (16 yrs & up)

This form of Japanese sword fencing will teach you the move of the Samurai. This is a non-contact sport where you work in pairs. Because of the intensity of this class you can achieve total body toneness. The Monday class is for established students of Kobudo; the Wednesday class is for beginners. Please call for pre-requisite training.

Work It Baby At Joe Stonis Park

 

Leave your sitters at home! 

Finally a FUN work out program for mothers to do WITH their babies, so get out your sneakers and get ready to WORK IT BABY!!

There are four class times to choose from and there is a discount if you sign up for more than one time a week.

Morning & evening classes are offered on Tuesdays & Thursdays.

HOME AND GARDEN CLASSES

BIRD HOUSE WORKSHOP (12 yrs & up)

Make your own wren house. We supply the design, the materials, and instruction. You sand, assemble and paint your own birdhouse with the help of an instructor. Then take your project home to display. This is great for parent/grandparent and child projects or for anyone interested in garden art or providing a home for wildlife. Bring your own philips head screwdriver please and an idea for the painting of your birdhouse!

GARDEN TOURS (16 yrs & up)

Go with a guide to tour local yards that are certified by Florida Yards and Neighborhoods for using Florida friendly concepts in their designs. Visit a variety of homes to learn what works on what terrain. Bring drinking water and wear close-toed shoes, please.

GARDENING FOR BUTTERFLIES (12 yrs & up)

Learn all about butterflies found in this area and how you can attract them to your yard. There will be information on necessary plants & where to place them. A guided walk to identify species will accompany this program.

BAT HOUSE WORK SHOP (16 yrs & up)

Mother Nature's pest control! One little brown bat can eat up to 600 mosquitoes in an hour. Attract these fascinating little creatures to your yard and create a beautiful piece of garden art at the same time. Work with an instructor while sanding, assembling, painting your own bat house. All materials are included. Just bring your own hammer and an idea of what to paint on your bat house.

ORCHIDS 101 (18 yrs & up)

Learn about orchids, containers, planting mediums, clippers, tools and care so you can grow beautiful orchids all year!

This class will walk you through orchid repotting techniques, both in a lecture and with a demo by the speaker at the end of class. See the 10/27 class to re-pot-it-yourself.

BYO ORCHID RE-POTTING CLASS (18 yrs & up)

Bring your own orchid, a pot, and the medium that is suitable for your orchid variety. A leading orchid grower and orchid judge will help you to re-pot your own orchid. Come to the lecture on 10/20 to find out what medium you need for your species.

You can grow roses in south west Florida, but it is different than in other climates. Gather specific tips from an experienced grower so you can grow beautiful roses here in SW FLA.

Students will receive a kit that they will use to create a fish out of wood.  Learn and use different techniques:  carve, paint, and burn scales and details.  Please bring whatever working tools you have, they will not be provided.

Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife Meetings

Do you enjoy wildlife?  Burrowing owls sure are cute, but they need your help to stay alive! Help clean up, track, and cordon off burrows. Meetings are held from 6:30 - 9:00pm the second Tuesday of the month at Rotary Park. The meetings are open to anyone, so please come by and find out what you can do to help. Upcoming meetings: 12/8, 1/12/10, 2/9, 3/9, 4/13

 

GHOST HUNTING 101 (16 yrs & up)

Learn how to become a ghost hunter from a real paranormal investigator. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, this class is fascinating and informative look into the unknown. Find out about the science behind the scenes as the instructor talks about and demonstrates the latest technology used to detect the presence of spirits. Take a look at the psychology related to some hauntings and cases, and some that just can't be explained.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED

Cape Coral Environmental Parks Society is seeking volunteers who enjoy nature & would like to work to improve our parks through environmental education & special projects. Volunteer opportunities at Rotary Park and Eco Preserve include: trail rovers & guides, exotic maintenance & trail clean–up, volunteer gardeners & volunteers to give tours of the butterfly house.
