Subject: Cape Police Arrest Suspect for Armed Robbery at Taco Bell
Cape Coral Police arrested one suspect and charged him in the robbery of a Taco Bell on Monday night. Keith Powell Jones Jr. (DOB: 03/31/1980) was charged with Armed Robbery after he entered the Taco Bell at 1616 Del Prado Boulevard and demanded money from employees.
At 8:30 p.m., Cape Police with Platoon Three responded to a 911 call reporting a robbery at the restaurant. The caller indicated a white male wearing a red hat, sunglasses, red shirt and jeans had entered the store with a handgun. After taking $320 from the employee at the register, he fled the scene on foot.
A witness told Cape Police that he saw a suspicious male leaving the scene and running along a retention pond where he removed and discarded his shirt. The witness said that Jones ran to a residence on SE 16th Street. Cape Police arrived at 1703 SE 16th Street and made contact with Keith Jones and Chad Rainey. During this time, officers also recovered a red hat, sunglasses and handgun in the retention area.
Detective Erica Cunningham from Investigative Services arrived on scene and conducted interviews with witnesses, and Rainey and Jones. An employee told the detective that she was working the front counter when Rainey and Jones came in earlier, ordered food and ate in the dining room. After both subjects left the store, Jones returned and showed her the handgun in his waistband and demanded cash. The manager then opened the register and gave him the money, and Jones left the store.
A show-up was conducted and based on the results, both Rainey and Jones were transported to the Cape Police Headquarters for questioning. Rainey admitted that he was with Jones earlier when they ate at Taco Bell; however, he said Jones had been talking about robbing a store before leaving their residence, and Jones took a handgun with him to Taco Bell. Rainey said after they finished eating at Taco Bell and left, Jones asked him for his shirt and ball cap. Rainey said he gave Jones his shirt and hat, and then he started walking back to Jones’ residence on SE 16th Street. He said just prior to reaching the house, Jones came running up with no shirt. Rainey said they entered the house, and a few minutes later, Cape Police showed up.
Jones initially indicated that Rainey said he needed money, and he had left the Taco Bell while Rainey stayed behind. However, he then invoked legal counsel and questioning was stopped.
Detective Cunningham established that probable cause existed to charge Jones with Armed Robbery. He was booked and transported to Lee County Jail.
