Subject: Cape Police Charge Driver with DUI Manslaughter in April 24 Traffic Fatality
Cape Coral Police arrested Ryan S. Schaufert (DOB: 06/28/1985) and charged him with DUI Manslaughter in the death of motorcyclist Ronald L. Johnson (DOB: 05/08/1955) who was killed on Friday, April 24.
The accident occurred at 10:27 p.m. in the 2600 block of Del Prado Boulevard South. Johnson was riding northbound on his Harley Davidson motorcycle in the center lane of Del Prado when he slowed for a traffic signal at SE 26th Street, which had turned from green to yellow. Schaufert, who was traveling behind Johnson in the same lane in a Toyota Matrix, was unable to avoid the motorcycle and drove the front end of his car onto the rear wheel of Johnson’s motorcycle. The impact ejected Johnson from the bike, and he came to rest in the roadway. Johnson was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital where he died from his injuries. Schaufert was not injured in the crash.
Results of Schaufert’s drug screening indicated that he had a BAC of .086 along with the presence of THC in his system.
